The NHS in North West Surrey is experiencing very high levels of demand on A&E, 999, out of hours and GP services and is asking patients who do not need urgent treatment to leave these services free for those who really need them.

The A&E department at St Peter’s Hospital is experiencing particularly high levels of demand and if you are not an emergency you are likely to have a long wait. The ambulance service is also extremely busy and is reminding people that 999 should only be dialed in an emergency.

Instead of going to A&E for minor ailments, during the winter period, there are a range of options available to North West Surrey residents when it’s urgent but not an emergency:

  • NHS 111: a free service available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Trained advisors and medical staff will assess your condition on the phone and point you to the right service for fast advice and support.
  • Local pharmacies offer advice and medicines for a range of common conditions, such as coughs, colds and headaches, without the need for an appointment. Free emergency contraception is also available at some local pharmacies.
  • GPs: Your GP is best placed to know your medical history. GP practices are open as usual again after the Christmas break, please call your surgery to book an appointment. Please don’t come to A&E as an alternative to seeing your GP.
  • NHS Walk-in Centres: Walk in centres are staffed by GPs, nurses and healthcare professionals and provide a wide range of services to treat minor injuries and illnesses such as cuts, sprains, strains, coughs and colds, eye infections and minor burns/scalds.
  • Self-care: a range of common illnesses and injuries can be treated at home simply by combining a well-stocked medicine cabinet with plenty of rest.
