Executive Summary

This policy sets the Trust standards for infection prevention and control for patients with respiratory viruses, including influenza and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19).

Respiratory viral infections cause a range of symptoms, including pyrexia, cough, aching joints and fatigue.

Patients with respiratory viral infections require single room isolation, ideally with ensuite facilities and anteroom (lobby area). Where the number of patients with such infections exceeds the single room capacity / availability within the Trust, it may be necessary to cohort patients with the same respiratory infections together, i.e. patients with influenza can be cohorted with other patients with influenza. However, patients with differing respiratory infections cannot be cohorted, as this would place patients at risk.

The policy also discusses what precautions to use in the event of patients presenting with a high consequence respiratory infection, such as Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and Avian Influenza.

In addition, the Operational Response for managing respiratory viruses is also covered. This provides the Trust operational response at times of surges/outbreaks, that may impact the Trust’s ability to manage core critical business.
