Staff, friends and supporters of Ashford and St Peter’s hospitals enjoyed a Gala Dinner at Wentworth Golf Club on Friday 8th October, with entertainment provided by legend Ronnie Corbett. The event was supported by Wentworth, who donated the room hire for the evening and formed part of the new Golf Marathon charity initiative – a fundraising drive for new urology equipment and services set up by the Trust and The Urology Foundation.

Explains Justin Collins, Urology Consultant: “We wanted to work with local golf clubs because of the demographics and the fact that most members of a club will know someone with a urological problem. Also, they are great socialising networks and a good way to spread an important message about how urological diseases, such as prostate cancer, kidney stones and bladder cancer affect so many people.”

After dinner auction prizes at the Gala Dinner included donated gifts from David Beckham, John Terry, Nick Faldo and Sam Torrance as well as rounds of golf with various celebrities including Ronnie Corbett, Tom O’Connor, Jason Leonard and Jodie Kidd. Overall, the evening raised just under £10,000.

In addition to the dinner, funds were also raised throughout September and October when golfers around Surrey were asked to play a sponsored round of golf. Justin said: “I personally played my own Golf Marathon during Prostate Cancer Awareness Week in September, which meant four rounds a day for seven days – a total of 504 holes. It was an exhausting challenge and I lost about 100 balls and one toenail! However, I felt very privileged to play so many fantastic courses in one week and my thanks go to Burhill, Chobham, Foxhills, Hoebridge, RAC, Silvermere, Sunningdale, West Byfleet and Wentworth Golf Clubs for all their support”.
