Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust has announced the results of its public and staff elections for a new Council of Governors, in preparation for becoming a Foundation Trust.

Through a formal election process which closed on 2nd November, a total of 16 public and 5 staff Governors were elected and will join 7 appointed Governors from local organisations.

Trust Chairman Aileen McLeish comments: “We were delighted at the number of local people and staff who stood for election to our new Council of Governors – 85 members of the public and 19 staff, including 4 volunteers, stood for a total of 21 places, only one of which was actually uncontested. 34% of our membership voted in the elections, which is above the national average for similar elections of around 30%. This shows the high level of interest and support for our two hospitals from both the local community and our own workforce.

We are now in the last stages in our assessment to become a Foundation Trust and if we are successful we will be even more accountable to the local community, to our patients and staff. Our Council of Governors will play an important and influential role in representing public and staff views on the future direction and overall strategy of the Trust.

The Council will exist in shadow form until we are formally licensed as a Foundation Trust, and one of their first official tasks will be to appoint the Chairman and Chief Executive. I am confident that our Governors will add real value to our planning and development work and I am looking forward to working with them to fulfill our long-term vision to be one of the best hospital trusts in the country.”
