Ashford & St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust has welcomed the opening of Westminster Ashford Home. The development, by Westminster Healthcare, will provide beds for elderly frail patients and includes a specialist unit for residents with early dementia.

Director of Operations at Ashford & St. Peter’s, Nick Hulme, commented: “This is a welcome addition to the nursing home sector for north west Surrey and south west London. Delayed transfers – where patients are unable to leave hospital – are currently reducing at Ashford & St. Peter’s but still stands at an average of 42 per month. There has been a decline in the availability of nursing home places in the Ashford area over recent years. Additional capacity in the nursing home sector will provide patients, their relatives or carers, and local authorities with more choice about where to go when they leave hospital, if they are unable to return home.”

Decisions about where patients are discharged to are made as part of a single assessment process which involves all health and social care agencies as appropriate. Ashford & St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust works closely with other health and social care providers to ensure that delayed transfers are minimised but decisions about funding patients in private nursing or residential care homes are made by patients, their carers or relatives and where appropriate the County Council or London Borough involved. Patients want to leave hospital as quickly as they can and this is beneficial for them providing the right support can be put in place. In some areas the lack of nursing home beds has been a factor in the high levels of delayed transfers.
