The race against diabetes is on! Behdad Shambayati, Lead Biomedical Scientist in the Cytology Department at Ashford & St. Peter’s Hospitals, is running in the Chicago Marathon on 12th October. He is seeking as many sponsors as possible for the 26.2 mile run to raise money for The Stephanie Marks Appeal. The Appeal was launched in June 2003 to raise £2.5 million to build and equip a specialist diabetes centre for the communities served by Ashford & St. Peter’s Hospitals.

Behdad said: “I do not normally run for charity as training is tough enough. Dealing with the burden of having to finish when there is money involved would only add to the pressure. Nevertheless friends and colleagues have been working hard to persuade me and at this late hour I have given in!

“Not only will the centre significantly help patients and carers faced with diabetes, but establish a key research and educational centre in the UK. Every pound sponsoring me to pound the streets of Chicago is a pound that will go directly to supporting diabetes care - a condition which is often misunderstood and can lead to serious long-term medical problems if left undetected and not carefully managed.”

Claire Daniels, Fundraising Manager at the Trust commented: “Obviously the more money we raise the sooner the Diabetes Centre can be built. It is great news that Behdad is running for the Stephanie Marks Appeal and we all wish him well for the run. Please do give Behdad your support as he ventures once again to Chicago; please contact the hospital today.”
