- Excellent health check results for ASPH
The Healthcare Commission’s Annual Health Check Ratings for 2007/08, published earlier in October, show that we have improved in both the quality of services and use of resources. The latest ratings for 2007/08 and for the 400,000 plus people the Trust serves are Good for quality of services and Fair for use of resources. In 2006/07, the previous year, we were Fair and Weak respectively.

- New artwork sparks discussion
Eagle eyed staff walking along the corridor near Main Theatres at St. Peter’s and going down the escalators will have noticed new artwork. The installation of art in hospitals has long been recognised as having benefits for patients, visitors and staff. Bright and interesting pictures stimulate the mind and make the environment in which we all work or come to receive treatment a more interesting place. And in our hospitals we have plenty of empty wall space to display paintings, photographs and other items of art!

- Patients like the one-day experience
Day surgery is now cutting edge – but that does not mean it’s cutting corners! The range of operations on offer as day surgery has grown tremendously in the recent years – bringing a huge benefit for patients. It wasn’t so long ago that the general public were surprised to learn that a gall bladder could be removed by a laparoscopic cholecystectomy procedure during day surgery. Now, even laparoscopic gastric banding is available and patients are discharged – with the right support at home - the same day as the operation.

- Stars shine for Ashford and St Peter's
The Trust had three entries in this years South East Coast ‘Best of Health Awards’. Senior Staff Nurse Terry Fulgencio in NICU (pictured left receiving her award & right) was nominated by one of the student nurses she mentored, for the South East Coast Academy award which aims to recognise an individual who, though their own high standards of leadership, mentoring or staff development skills, has inspired and motivated others to make real and lasting improvements and to achieve personal and professional goals. Of the three finalists from Kent, Surrey and Sussex it was Terry who received the Award.

- Honorary lay Chaplain licensed
History has been made at St. Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey, with the licensing of an Honorary Lay Chaplain. The special day in the life of the ASPH Pastoral Care Team took place at the traditional Easter Carol Service when one of the volunteer Chaplaincy Visitors, Mrs Diana Manthorpe, received her official licence to serve at St. Peter’s as an Honorary Lay Chaplain. Di was given her “Readers Licence” by the Venerable Stuart Beake, Archdeacon of Surrey. This is an unusual event, since Readers are normally licensed to minister within a Church, rather than a Chaplaincy. So this is a “first” not only for St. Peter’s but also in an “Acute” NHS setting within the Diocese of Guildford.

- Local survey of mothers shows maternity improvement
On Friday 25th January the Healthcare Commission published their report on maternity services across England and Ashford and St. Peter’s was marked as a ‘least well performing Trust. “Obviously we are disappointed with the results,” says Director of Nursing and Operations Michaela Morris, “but I can assure women planning to have their baby at St. Peter’s that the maternity unit is safe. We have a very good clinical record and as you all know the Maternity Unit is supported by our excellent specialist Neonatal Intensive Care Unit which is one of the reasons why we attract to our maternity service, women from across Surrey and further afield, who it is expected may have difficulties with their birth.”
