Case Number 4733
Request Date 15/04/2016
Completion Date 11/05/2016

Details of the Request

My FOI request is to find out how much of your service and budget you dedicate towards speech therapy within your NHS trust, specifically when treating Parkinson's patients. If this is too specific I am happy for it to just cover speech therapy in general.

I would like a response to the queries below

  1. How much of your budget in monetary and percentage terms is allocated to support for Parkinson’s?

  2. Do you provide speech therapy within your Parkinson’s services?

  3. If so, how much of of your budget in monetary and percentage terms was allocated to speech therapy services in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015?

  4. How regularly do Parkinson's patients have access to NHS funded speech therapy?

  5. How many Parkinson's patients have you treated on average over the past five years?

  6. How many speech therapists do you provide funding for? Has this number increased or decreased in the past five years?

Details of the Response

The Trust does not split budgets or activity for Speech & Language Therapy(SLT) by diagnosis so we cannot provide anything specific to Parkinson’s Disease(PD). However as requested we have provided the answer for SLT as a whole.

1. How much of your budget in monetary and percentage terms is allocated to support for Parkinson’s?

The Trust does not hold the data.

2. Do you provide speech therapy within your Parkinson’s services?

SLT for PD is primarily provided in the community However when admitted to the hospital if a patient with PD is referred with swallowing problems to SLT, they will be seen for assessment, management advice and signposting in relation to their PD. The community trust may be able to offer data regarding SLT provision once the patient is discharged from ASPH i.e. in the community setting.

3. If so, how much of your budget in monetary and percentage terms was allocated to speech therapy services in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015?

As stated earlier the Trust does not split SLT budgets by diagnosis, so figures for the whole SLT service are provided instead as requested.

Please note: The Trust does not hold figures pre 2013-14 due to a change of Financial ledger.

Total Speech Therapy Budget % of total
2015/16 £286,165 0.17%
2014/15 £236,914 0.15%
2013/14 £238,806 0.16%

4. How regularly do Parkinson's patients have access to NHS funded speech therapy?

SLT for PD is primarily provided in the community and this service is currently run by Virgin Care.

5. How many Parkinson's patients have you treated on average over the past five years?

The data collated in 2014 and 2015 gives an average of 47 PD patients being seen by SLT a year. Each patient received an average of 1.24 visits from an SLT. A visit may range from 15 minutes – 1.5hours depending on need and may consist of an assessment, management and/or MDT liaison. In addition the SLT outpatient clinics (voice and Videofluroscopy) may see PD patients, but the Trust does not keep data on this.

6. How many speech therapists do you provide funding for? Has this number increased or decreased in the past five years?

For the year 2015/16 the Trust has funding for wte 7.2. This has increased in the past 5 years.
